Precision reference

The output level of S!NG is a precise -20dBu into industry standard 600 OHMs.  This is regardless of the mode and is accurate to within +/- 0.5dB.

Low distortion

S!NG generates sine waves with ultra-low distortion: as good as standard laboratory equipment.  At 1KHz distortion is less than 0.5%.

Continuous sine waves

S!NG provides continuous sine waves at a variety of fixed frequencies (see specification below).  In addition to the normal differential mode (DM) output like a microphone, S!NG also generates common mode (CM) signals to check the common mode rejection of cables and pre-amplifiers.  Balanced microphone inputs are designed to amplify the difference between pins 2 & 3 and reject anything that is common (like interference) so sending only common signals shows how good the preamp / cables are at rejecting interference.

Pulsed sine waves

S!NG generates pulsed sine waves with two different pulse widths/rates (fast or slow), in differential or common mode.

Sweeps

S!NG generates swept sine waves, either over a wide bandwidth (20Hz – 10kHz), for analysing speakers/amplifiers/eq, or over narrow bandwidths (chirps), for listening to room acoustics, again in differential or common mode. The sweeps S!NG generates are logarithmic/natural sounding; each octave is swept in the same amount of time.  There are three different sweep rates available, 0.1 seconds per octave, 1 second per octave and 10 seconds per octave.

Clicks

S!NG generates a range of clicks which you can use as an aid to set time delays in speaker systems.  You can alter the frequency of the clicks to suit the speakers.

Phasing

Phase testing checks that a positive input signal makes the loudspeakers move towards the listener.  S!NG generates two types of signal to check the phasing of a system:  strobe and heartbeat.  The easiest to use of the two methods is the ‘heartbeat’, which generates a positive excursion followed by a negative excursion.  You can feel this by touching the loudspeaker (lightly) and listening to the audio.  In strobe mode you point the dual colour LED towards the speaker (in a dark room) to see the red light in front of the green (as viewed on the speaker).

Remote control

You change the mode/frequency of S!NG using the phantom power switch on the mixing desk/PA system/preamp.  This means you can control S!NG from the mixing position while it is plugged into a microphone lead on stage.  If you need to adjust S!NG at the stage position just plug–unplug S!NG instead of switching on / off (see Modes and sub-modes).

DC balance

S!NG’s output is DC balanced so there are no other clicks associated with turn on/off.  Each sine transmission starts from zero then goes positive for the first half cycle and then ends with an equally negative half cycle such that the average is zero.  It is most often the case that pulse generators simply turn on and off without observing this DC balance issue; thus causing audible clicks in addition to the intended pulse.

Keyring

Each unit is supplied with a split ring so you can use it as a keyring.  You never know when you might need an audio reference so if it's always with you there's nothing to forget. Alternatively, if you prefer, the stainless steel band can be removed.

Modes and sub-modes

At switch-on, S!NG will semaphore the current settings (using the LED and by sending notes).  To change the current setting, switch off the phantom power in the first semaphore to increment the main mode, or the second semaphore to increment the sub-mode.  Below is a complete list of all the modes and sub modes.

The audio semaphore S!NG sends is ‘bracketed’ by three ‘peeps’.  The first ‘peep’ is there to let you know that the first semaphore which indicates the main mode is about to be sent.  The second ‘peep’ lets you know that the first semaphore is complete and that the second, sub-mode, semaphore is about to start.  The final ‘peep’ lets you know that the semaphore is complete.

Other LED messages

During normal operation, ie when you’re listening to the sine tones:
Green = differential mode, ‘on’ (audible) or negative (heartbeat or strobe).
Red = common mode, ‘off’ (‘rejected’) or positive (heartbeat or strobe).
Off = no sound
